Spread bet: FTSE100 long

Trade Diary

24th Dec: Morning

To be honest, I usually stay far away from spread betting indices, and currencies even more so. I don’t know anyone who actually makes money, in the long run, spread betting currencies. But this morning I did make a small spread bet on the FTSE, things are looking bullish. France has opened its ports so the 2000/3000 lorries hopefully will start to get moving. There is potential for a deal with Europe and… It’s Christmas! 🎅 Historically people are more bullish at this time.

So it was only a small punt and the market seemed to like what the PM had to say until he started taking questions 🙂 although it could have all been coincidence. Ended up with a small end of day loss but I’ve kept the bet open over Christmas.
Keeping the bet open does mean I get overnight fees which due to the extended Christmas break is a little bit more than the usual overnight but ok for me.

29th Dec: Morning

FTSE100 28th Dec 2020 to 29th Dec 2020

Markets open high in the morning with FTSE up around 2% at one point. It caught me a little by surprise. I logged in just as I was munching on my scrambled egg just as I saw my order limit being hit and my deal closing! ARGH! Not to worry the lesson learnt. Started a new bet on the FTSE100 but also noticed that the FTSE 250 was actually doing better so started a bet on that as well. By mid-morning, I brought my stop losses on the trades up so I would be in profit whatever happens and then took my son out to the park.

Lesson From Trade: On short deals & spreads don’t set a limit to sell the trade.

So my stops actually did fire while I was out in the park but all in profit. A really good trade in the end.
